Location and Area
Finland is located in northern Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea, Gulf of Bothnia, and Gulf of Finland, between Sweden, Norway and Russia, and is about 1.200 km long and 600 km wide. It covers an area of 337.030 km2, with 76% forests and woodland, 8% farmland and 16% of other land.
Terrain
Mostly low, flat to rolling plains interspersed with lakes and low hills. Lowest point: Baltic Sea 0 m. Highest point: Haltiatunturi 1,328 m
Climate
Cold temperate; potentially subarctic, but comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea, and about 190.000 lakes.

Hunting
The main game species are the capercaillie, black grouse, hazel grouse, willow grouse, northern hare, brown hare, moose, white-tailed deer, mallard, fox, raccoon dog, badger, mink, beaver, muskrat, pine marten, bears, wolves, lynx. belong to large predators.
Hunters
There are around 300.000 hunters in Finland who pay the annual game management fee (i.e. game hunting license). Women make up 3 percent of this number. A total of 5,81 percent of the population of Finland hold a hunting card, which is more than anywhere else in Europe when compared to the size of the population ( 0,89 pr. km2 ). |
